High time for a Blog update!

To say there's been lots going on in my life is a serious understatement! I thought it best to bring everyone up to speed on where my photography business stands.

I've stepped back from it over the past several months; only booking existing clients and scheduling very few new ones. I plan on moving forward with very limited bookings as well. While I miss the hustle and bustle of back-to-back shoots, I have other committments that come first at this point.

So...shoot me an email if you're interested in a session. We'll see if our schedules work. My time may be limited but it's sure not impossible! I'd love to meet you and your little one(s).

At 6 months and 20 months these sisters are a busy twosome to photograph! Each with their own distinct personalities yet unmistakably sisters.

The collage below combines 7 images from the session. It measures 16" x 20" and is mounted on white, bevelled-edge board and comes ready to hang. This sweet boy is just over 6 months old and was so happy during our shoot. He had a ready smile and those big, wide eyes followed my every move. His mom said he is a very contented baby and it really showed!

For those thinking ahead, I've uploaded some of my early Valentine photo card offerings. These are sized between 2x3 and 3x4.

If you've had a session with me in the past year, just give a call and let me know which image(s) you'd like in which card and I'll get them underway. Minimum 50 card order (enough for 30 classmates plus friends/family). This is a perfect opportunity to get any additional orders in as well because my minimum re-order amount is $50.00.

Happy Valentines Day

Ok so it's not quite Valentines Day but in order to have your children's custom photo cards ready, we'll have to get the images sorted out well in advance.

If you've already had a shoot in the past year, give me a call and let me know which image(s) you'd like in your cards. This would also be a good time for any re-orders of prints as I've implemented a minimum re-order requirement of $50 this year.

If you're looking to book a new session, it should be completed by January 19th in order to have your cards ready and in your hands by February 1.

I'll be adding samples over the next few days for your consideration...stay tuned!

It's soooo close....I'm this close to being done with a complete overhaul of product offerings, pricing, policies, etc...

Wait until you see how it's presented - I'm LOVING the format!

A few key points to the overhaul:

1. I had planned to move ahead with full pricing this year but with the tough times we're entering into I've decided to move my prices accordingly. There are very few products that have doubled in price like I had planned.

2. I'm implementing a referral program for those who help promote my business to their family/friends when it results in a photo session with a new client for me. $20 print credit on your next session - refer 4 new clients and get $100 in print credit!

3. A minimum order of $200 is required. That's certainly not a stretch for most but necessary for my editing time.

4. Seven sample wall galleries for your consideration, taking the guesswork out of the design.

5. Tips on clothing for your session, helping your child during their session, etc.

6. Collections - 6 to choose from - 3 Print collections and 3 Digital File collections

Lots and lots and lots of good stuff....soon....very, very soon....keep the drum roll going...

These two may be sisters but they are different in so many ways. Big sister has straight blonde hair while little sister's is curly and brown. Little sister would have sat patiently for hours while I shot from every angle imaginable while big sister .... well let's just say she had other plans! :)

In due time we got the session in the bag with some beautiful images to show for it.

For any of you who may be concerned about the co-operation of your child during a shoot - know this - if you've booked me for a full session then that is what you'll receive. Sometimes it takes a little longer than expected. No fretting allowed Mom and Dad!

I find a great solution for a distracted or unco-operative child is to spend some one-on-one time with them. Mom, Dad and siblings in another room for a short time while I engage the child - giving him or her all my attention. It worked with the 3 year old beauty above and I have a sneaking suspicion it would work with your child.

Wouldn't it be nice to get a great picture of all your children in one shot? Not pulling each other's hair, not making funny faces or just generally taunting each other. Sometimes you wonder if that's even possible.

Well, here's proof that it CAN be done! This mini-session got the shots that Mom and Dad were looking for - Christmas gifts of the 3 children together for family/friends and updates to the individual shots of each child on their own familyroom wall.

Mini-sessions (1/2 hour in length) are always whirlwind but these kids did great in the short time frame. We nailed the shots and rushed the order through for a fast turnaround time. Thanks so much guys!

Can you see the look she's giving her dog? Wide-eyed and trusting. No worries there as her puppy is very gentle and protective of her.

I love the little Santa hat her Mom picked up just before the shoot - tis the season and all you know.

This almost-10-month-old was so easy to shoot. Her mom warned me that she is an avid crawler but for the most part she stayed put like a pro.

Less than 2 weeks old, this tiny beauty is absolute perfection. She took her cues well as we moved her from here to there and everywhere. Barely a peep out of her.

This 11 month old sweetheart had only been home a few short weeks when we had our shoot. Mom and Dad are over the moon with happiness - it really comes across in their gallery images.

It was tough for me to only select 4 images to share - I'm smitten with ALL of them. Even the one where she's trying to pull off her Halloween costume. LOL

Mother-Daughter Love: my first Celebrating Adoption session

During the family shoots that I do, the love is always apparent between the parent(s) and child(ren). This time though, there was an emotion running through the interaction between mother and daughter that was extra special. Both knew how absolutely blessed they were to have found each other in this vast world.

It was a very moving experience for me and so heartwarming to be a part of.

Pretty in Pink: The Birthday Session

At first she was unsure if swiping some icing from the top of the cake was allowed but - seeing that it was actually encouraged - this one year old dug right in for more!

I designed a custom square 7 image collage for this shoot. The same template can be used for any occasion really. I wanted to show it here so clients can get an idea of what is available. It can be sized to whatever square dimension you require.

I could package orders all day

For many, many years I've enjoyed the experience of wrapping gifts. Christmas at our home means a carefully thought out coordination of colours and themes in the gift-wrapping department.

So now that I need to package orders for clients I'm having so much fun choosing the materials. The combination of chocolate brown, green and turquoise is what I'm currently using - matches my logo colouring perfectly.

Look Who's Three (months that is!)

Three months can be a tricky age to photograph - no longer a newborn and can't yet sit up - but this baby did a great job in all kinds of 'poses' his mom and I got him in.

He's got such a sweet look in the first one while propped up on his arms on Mommy and Daddy's big bed. I suspect he'll have the same sweet look in a couple of years except he'll have left all the linens in a crumpled heap after jumping up and down on the same bed!

Effective immediately:

1. Galleries will be available for viewing for a period of 7 days.

2. If you place your order within the first 4 days of your gallery going online, you will receive 1 complimentary 8 x 10 or 2 - 5 x 7s.

3. If you require an extension of your gallery, I will arrange for an additional 3 days at a charge of $25 per extension. The extension will start on the date of your choosing and after receipt of your extension fee.

I'm thrilled with the results of the latest shoot with this little baby girl. The detail on the delicate dresses, the handwork on the bonnet (not shown here) and the vintage children's folding chair all contributed to this Victorian photo shoot.

I'm in the process of completely reworking my product offering. I'll be streamlining the line of albums I currently sell to able to keep stock on hand rather than purchase from my supplier each time an order requires.

I'm looking at 3 full resolution Digital Image packages. I've been hesitant to offer CDs of images as it immediately 'dead ends' my photography sales and puts the ball in the client's hands to have the images printed. The times they are a-changin' though (who said that - Bob Dylan?) and after more than a few requests, there will be digital packages available for your consideration very soon.

My portfolio-building is near complete and therefore my current discount of 50% will no longer apply. This will become effective January 1, 2009. On one hand this makes me nervous because I certainly don't want my current client base to reconsider due to increased cost. On the other hand though, those who are familiar with the cost of on-location lifestyle photography know that my full pricing is very reasonable.

Having said all of that, there will be incentives for different levels of investment. I don't have all the details finalized but stay tuned for more information.

Four weeks to go...

Mom-to-be is a natural in front of the camera and it clearly shows. Dad-to-be joined in for a few and even their beloved dog got in on the action!

Thanks to Auntie-to-be for help with clipping and wrapping and general primping of her gorgeous sister during the shoot.

As I add these images to this post I'm reminded to say a few things about my maternity sessions:

The session is about you. You choose what it is you want to document about your pregnancy. The degree to which you are clothed is your decision. Maternity sessions are personal and I always respect your wishes regarding what it is you'd like to capture. I wholeheartedly believe that we can come away with terrific images whether you're in a turtleneck, without a stitch of clothing or somewhere in between.

Bottom line - it's about you. Ummm, well for another few weeks or so....then it's all about BABY!

A beach, a wheat field and a big veranda

Those were some of the backdrops for a family shoot this past weekend.

Note to self: Wheat fields are being harvested during the last week of July. To avoid disappointment, do these shots in the middle of July for optimum wheat!

You can see just a hint of a sunset in this family picture.

The warm backlighting only adds to the beauty of this 13 year girl.

I can't even begin to describe how much fun I had shooting these high-energy girls! I knew right away it was going to be a blast when they saw one of my new props (a sock monkey) in my bag of goodies and insisted he come along for the session.

Their spontaneity and lack of inhibition in front of the camera made my job so incredibly easy.

Little one year old Julia

I was looking forward to the shoot with Julia and her parents in Port Stanley. A quick stop at a field of Queen Anne's Lace and then of course the obligatory beach!

Portraits taken at the beach are the epitome of summertime. Sweet and carefree.

I wasn't sure if my new pettiskirt would fit her...well it did and in the last image she's plopped down in the fluff!

Announcing: 411 cards!

What's YOUR 411? What's the contact information you want to give to your friends, family, acquaintances, etc? These (two-sided) cards encompass all that information and include pictures!

They're very popular with teens south of the border right now.

They're referred to as 'mommy cards' for exchanging at play groups and at the park.

Couples in Europe have had basic versions of these for many years already.

I've just recently acquired these templates and I'm excited to be able to offer them to my clients. Simply choose two images (with the proper orientation) from our session and I'll make a personalized 411 card for you.

Look Who's Growing Up!

This was the third time I've had the pleasure of a session with baby Scarlett. At nine months she's begun broadening her world with lots of crawling, a little tentative standing and much curiosity for everything around her.

Both her Mom and Dad were included in this shoot so we got several sweet shots of the three of them.

This little guy was amazing during our shoot - we barely heard a peep out of him! Unlike most newborns, his eyes were open the majority of the time. I think he didn't want to miss anything going on around him.

Giving Back: Silent Auctions

I'm excited to be teamed up with two worthy causes who are both having silent auctions in the next couple of weeks.

This Saturday there's a Lobsterfest hosted by Craigwood Children's Youth Services
It's at Bellemere Winery right here in London. I've donated a full session, a complimentary 11 x 14 of the recipient's favourite image and 10% off any prints, storyboards, collages or albums.

That's more than a $100 value for the high bidder!

I'm offering the same package for my Mom's church bazaar on the 10th of May at the Union United Church

I'm looking forward to meeting the winners and to see what type of shoot they're interested in!

Promise me something please

Promise me you'll backup your hard drive. Soon. Very soon. Preferably today.

Don't do what I did. I bought an external hard drive several weeks ago and let it sit on my desk collecting dust.

Then I awoke yesterday to a completely empty Outlook folder. Gone. Like some sort of sickening magic trick. Over 300 emails that I'd sorted through and filed not long ago - missing. So many years of virus-free activity online came crashing to an end.

After several hours of tech support and extensive googling (and a mini-meltdown), I've decided to chalk it up to experience and move on.

I've lost my contacts in my Outlook address book as well so if you're reading this, would you kindly send me a quick email so I can add you in again?

Oh and one more thing - back up your hard drive. Now.

Pets are family too

Scarlett at 6 months

Remember sweet Scarlett at 3 months? Well here she is now at 6 months - still sweet and sporting 2 little bottom teeth!

Have you ever seen eyes this glorious? Photographers often look to capture the elusive natural catchlight in their subject's eyes. Catchlights enhance the eyes with a certain extra shot of 'life'. If you click on the first picture of Scarlett to enlarge it you'll see not only the window (reflection of natural light source) in her eyes, but me as well - taking the picture. And here I thought I was behind the camera!

Sisters: Julia and Riley

How cute are these two little girls!?

I tried to get soft-spoken Julia to open up a little and feel comfortable in front of the camera by posing some questions. Asking "Do you have a boyfriend?" often brings about shy smiles and giggles. Julia however, solemnly responded with "I'm far too young to have a boyfriend". Good work Mom and Dad.

Riley on the other hand was working the camera like a pro. No trepidation with this little one. In a moment caught unawares, her piercing blue eyes tell the story of her sweet innocence.

After breaking out the lollipops, Julia and Riley planted a couple of sticky kisses on their Daddy's cheeks. The kisses may have been their idea or it may have been mine. I'm not saying. Certainly not right here on this blog. Never.

I found the greatest little stools while shopping in Toronto yesterday.

I can see the red one on a nice hardwood floor with a toddler plunked down on it. The distressed garden stool will work nicely outdoors with a little one perched atop. Maybe in a field of Queen Anne's Lace or an expanse of wheat.

So many possiblilities....

Francois: toughest session to date

This subject proved to be my toughest yet.

He was uncooperative and only had one pose in mind.

He kept this cheesy grin on his face the whole time.

I couldn't get a nice catch light in his eyes or encourage him to relax.

He was stiff during the entire shoot - stone faced too.

No response whatsoever when I tried to engage him from behind the camera.

I guess it had to happen sooner or later...

See...this is what happens when there is too much time between sessions. Please save me from myself and book a session in the upcoming months. It will stop me from photographing gargoyles and other strange inanimate objects around the house!

Allan - 22 month old ball of fire!

My great-nephew (ouch, that makes me sound old!) Allan was a ball of fire yesterday during our mini session. Keeping him in one spot for more than a minute was a challenge to say the least. My niece April was pulling out all the stops to keep his attention - balls, blocks, books, trucks and of course the ever-popular candy.

We got some good shots and I've compiled a few into a couple of collages to show the versatility of what is available.

The first is an 8 x 10 so you can pop it into a standard size frame. You could also have it mounted on foam core and set it atop a photo ledge. There's always the easel option as well.

The second is an 11 x 14 so while it's a little larger, it too can be put into a standard size frame.

Keep in mind that the background colour can be changed to complement the photos or your decor. You can choose the phrase/saying. The colour and font can be customized as well.

These are two new sizes I'm offering so they're not listed under Pricing yet. Email me if you're interested in a quote.

Malcolm's Urban Session

I had such a blast on this shoot with Malcolm. We explored the streets (and alleys) of downtown London for locations and found so many. It helped that he lives close to downtown and knows his way around!

Thanks to Scarlett's mom and grandmother who were up for anything. From re-arranging furniture to holding the baby while crouched under a table - nothing stood in the way of getting the shot!

I'm busy proofing a session from this past weekend. Baby Scarlett (3 and a half months) was a dream to photograph. Not only is she cute as a button but she was a real trooper with all the clothing changes; not a complaint from her the entire time.

At this time I offer 2 sizes of storyboards and collages - 10 x 20 and 20 x 20. There are 3 storyboard designs and 10 collage designs. I have an extensive selection of ready-made Word Definitions that can be used on any of these products. The definitions include Girl, Adore, Wonder, Love, Delightful, Loud, Joy, Giggle, Boy, Perfection, Play, Miracle, Happiness, Family, Survivor, Imagination, Love (for couples), Woof, Graduate, Peace, Hero, Father, Mother, Brother, Sister. I can also put a personalized phrase on your storyboard or collage.

Legalities

Before any of my sessions I will ask you to sign a Model Release form. It's a simple document that basically does 2 things. It states that you will allow me to use images from our session for my own advertising purposes (ie business cards, sample products, on my website). It also states that you allow me to copyright the images in my or my business name.

Standard photography legalities tweaked to include my name and business name.

Signature required is either that of the model if over 18 or the parent / legal guardian if the model is a minor.

Just a heads up on the fine print...

Referral Program

When your prints are delivered I will include business cards - with an image from your session (with your permission of course) - for you to hand out to whomever you choose.

Should one of those people come to me with my business card and book a full session, you'll receive a free 8 x 10 with your next full session booking. Should they purchase more than $600 in products, you'll also receive a 10 image wallet album of your next full session booking.

Session Fees

Full on-location sessions are $125. These typically last between 1.5 - 2 hours. Maximum of 2 (drive to) locations and 3 clothing changes. Additional charge for more than 4 persons. You'll be shown 30 proofs.

Mini on-location sessions are $50. About half an hour long, one location, 2 clothing changes, 2 persons max. You'll be shown 10 proofs.

*Retainer will not be refunded should you cancel less than 24 hours prior to your session

Don was decked out in his hockey gear for this shoot. His big brother Josh keeps a watchful eye over him whether it be while practicing in the driveway or on the ice during a game.

The grainy-ness (is that a word?) and the graffiti work well together in this photo.
Isn't this one ADORABLE? Ok, maybe I shouldn't refer to an 8 year old tough guy as adorable, but c'mon...

1.5" Ribbon for Camera Straps

I have some ribbon available that fits perfectly on SLR camera straps. I sewed the second (blue baroque) on my camera strap and I love it! It was slow going on my Canon strap because it's thick. I also have straps that I bought online and they're WAY easier to sew this ribbon onto because they're thinner and more pliable. The bulk straps that I bought are not the same quality as my own Canon strap but certainly safe for one's camera (same length and same fasteners as my Canon strap).

If anyone is interested in the ribbon I'll cut enough for one strap and mail it to you for $5.00 U.S. If you want a strap to sew it onto I'll mail both the strap and the ribbon for $10.00 U.S. If you make me sew it on for you (I've discovered I'd rather take pictures than sew!) I'll mail you a strap complete with sewn on ribbon for $20.00 U.S. Shipping to U.S./Canada included. Paypal only please.

I have enough of the stripe for 2 straps, the blue baroque for 3 straps, the pink baroque for 5 straps and the circles for 3 straps. Oh, and I only have 9 blank straps.

As great and Melody and Blair were to work with on their wedding day, that was my first and last wedding. Weddings are a whole other category in the photography world - one that I don't plan on entering. I simply don't have the proper equipment for the venue and weddings take a disproportionate amount of time to shoot and edit. Having said that, I couldn't resist putting up a few of their photographs to share with you all.

This last shot is one that I took with their Thank You cards in mind. A little foam core, a little photo editing and voila ~ custom thank you cards!

Prop testers :)

I found a great new prop for photographing newborns but before I could get a nice soft blanket in the bottom to see how it would work....this happened.

Apparently I should have bought 3 of these baskets - one for babies, one for Callie and one for Sebastian. I'm guessing it passed the test considering you kitties won't get out of it!

RITA: Glowing Mother-to-be
